This happens to me on a desktop computer after I botched an install of some
nvidia drivers. I am unable to run unity, It just displays the kernel messages
it usually does when logging me out the shows me the login screen, the same
thing happens if I run /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p after logging into a
2d session that runs metacity. When I try and run compiz --replace from the 2d
session I my desktop flips and window decoration goes very strange (the exit
minimise and close buttons go the side for instance). I am pretty certain it's
a driver issue and I am going to try doing this:
switch to a terminal using ctr+alt+f1
stop x: /etc/init.d/lightdm stop
uninstalling the nvidia drivers using nvidia-installer --uninstall
remove any leftovers: apt-get purge nvidia*
reinstall mesa and x apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core
xserver-xorg-core libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri
restart the computer: reboot
