Public bug reported:

As of this morning, I have had to reboot a few times because the system
was unable to acquire memory to even fork a process.

This last time, after booting, I decided to try to figure out what it is.
It appears that as long as Firefox is running (even if not doing anything) it
keeps spawning defunct processes until the system has to be rebooted (if it
happens when the screensaver is on - preventing FF from being killed).

ps -ef | grep defunct | grep -v grep | wc -l
shows an ever increasing number
It was over 3000 before I last killed it off.
