I experience a similar problem after upgrading from Kubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 (pm-utils 1.4.1-8 --I guess-- to 1.4.1-9). System does go to sleep mode. When wakeup is triggered, I can see the password prompt but it hangs after a couple of seconds. Hard reboot required. I disabled the password prompt to avoid that step and to see what happens, and I could see how plasma crashed every time, then it hangs. Hard reboot required. Also WiFi doesn't work, but that seems to be a consequence of resume malfunctioning.
My laptop is a Dell Vostro 3400. I could get Alt+PrntScr+REISUB to work.
