ran the ubuntu desktop 12.04 x64 installer from usb stick, and at the
end it failed to install grub on sda, sdb and sdc. upon failing to
install on sdc I get the message that the installer has crashed.

sda and sdc are SATA SSDs, while sdb is a normal SATA drive
