I have a guess that both are related and possibly a cause of the move to
multi-arch and to Unity.

Multi-arch because it seems they are both affecting x64 users from what
I can see.

And Unity (at least for the webcam problems) because symptoms are less
pronounced if you switch from Unity to Unity 2d or one of the Gnome
options.
