I actually ran into this bug as well. I tried several times to install 12.04 LTS 64 bit on a empty hard drive through a live USB Drive. I have found that this is caused by trying to install while the options for downloading updates and the third party software is checked. i am currently installing without the updates and 3rd party software and it is running fine.
