Please try the following workaround:
Completely close Thunderbird.
Edit the user.js file in you Thunderbird profile folder(by default should be
located at ~/.thunderbird/xxxxxx.default), it probably does not exist so create
the file.
Insert the following lines:
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http", "/usr/bin/firefox");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https", "/usr/bin/firefox");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.ftp", "/usr/bin/firefox");
Restart thunderbird and see if this is fixed.
