Hi, Sorry, I've been traveling. Go to: Edit->Preferences->Advanced and toggle off "Enable Global Search and Indexer". Restart and see if that helps the endless polling. If so, you can try to rm global-messages-db.* in your .thunderbird/*.default dir and then toggle on ""Enable Global Search and Indexer" which will initiate and index rebuild.
