Guys, I recommend trying this, at least as a workaround: Go into Tools / Preferences and on the main Interface tab set "Show system tray icon" to "Always".
Reboot your system and invoke Pidgin from the Indicator applet menu (not from a launcher icon)... and see if it launches. If memory serves, clicking on it once will launch Pidgin (hidden) and clicking it again will bring up your Buddy List.
