Like the original poster I am using Ubuntu 12.04, having upgraded from 10.04, and am also using a Dell 1525. However unlike the OP I have the Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02) wireless device compared to his Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g but we both have the same problem with the wireless switch.
My kernel version is 3.2.0-24.39.
