The way it's supposed to work, is that you have both "Microphone" and
"Line In" in the sound settings. When you select "Line In" in the sound
settings, "Mic Jack Mode" in alsamixer should switch to "Line In", and
when you select "Mic In",  "Mic Jack Mode" in alsamixer should switch to
"Mic In".

Probably the former happens, but not the latter, which seems strange to me. But 
perhaps we can sort it out given a PulseAudio log:

While the log is running, please first change it to mic in manually, then 
unplug, then plug back in, and confirm that the bug is now reproduced. 

Also, does this bug appear regardless of whether the Gnome sound
settings is open or closed while you're plugging/unplugging the mic?
