Found the answer:

In kernel 3.2 and 3.4 (but not 3.0), the module "hid_logitech_dj" is
needed for full support of the unifying receiver. This module is not
loaded into the ramdisk for our keyboards to work during the bootup
process. I'm surprised that this bug hasn't been more prominent.

So to fix this, add with superuser permissions "hid_logitech_dj" to
/etc/initramfs/modules.

Then do "sudo update-initramfs -k all -u"

Reboot.

Note that this bug exists in 3.2 and upstream 3.4.

My first bug! Now what happens?
