thank you for the bug report!

Just a few hours ago, updated closed source drivers for ati ('fglrx')
and nvidia ('nvidia') were uploaded for Edgy. The latest update for both
of these drivers is supposed to add Composite support for them. (though
I'm not sure if this works well for ati)

Could you report here if Composite support works on your ati board, as
soon as your machine is up-to-date?

Also, I agree with you, support for Debconf is necessary here. Will
likely be added in the next few days/weeks.
