It looks like it was the installation of -backports fixed it. These
drivers should be available in Ubuntu 12.04, and probably in previous
version (Ubuntu 11.10) as well. Closing this bug. Please reopen (or
file a new bug and provide the bug number here) if it is still not
working in these versions.
