I'm having a similar issue. I've been using a Realtek 8139 network card in Ubuntu 10.04 for almost 2 years without problems. Now it loses connectivity randomly. I'm using Ubuntu Server 12.04 from a fresh install, the machine is configured as a gateway to the internet. The internal interface works ok, but the external (connected to a broadband cable-modem) stops receiving packets after some time. Currently I have written a simple bash script (+cron) to ifconfig down and up the adapter when I cannot ping google, but this doesn't work every time (for example, in the midnight it was trying to restore the connectivity for 6 hours without success).
