You can only attach one file at a time in Launchpad. I'm not 100% sure if the updates should have automatically switched from nvidia-current to nvidia-current-updates, but I think they should have, base on other people's experiences (I don't own an NVIDIA card). Installing packages from the X Updates (x-swat) PPA may prevent this from occurring but you got a very similar package for that PPA anyway and it is working for you now, which is the main thing.
I understand that you have locked the driver version in Synaptic to prevent being downgraded back to 295.40.
