At least that's what your BIOS says, and what the drivers configure the codec for.
The front one is a headphone jack though. When something is plugged into this jack, the rear jacks are automatically muted. There's nothing obvious from what I can see in the log files, but we can try something at random: you can try installing snd-hda-tools from ppa:diwic/hda and then execute "sudo hda-jack-sense-test -d 2 -a". Node 0x1b should switch to "Present = yes" if you run it while the front headphone is plugged in.
