This is a new install of Ubuntu 12 on a Asus laptop.  I disabled ACPI in order 
to install Ubuntu, prior to that it would fail consistently and/or give screen 
with white blocks.  
After the system install I am unable to install applications without various 
error codes (i.e. sub process... returned an error code (1))
