Hi,

I don't believe that dimmer control has much affect here. As stated in 
the OP even xset dpms direct commands fail to sleep or suspend the 
screen. More than likely this is a bug in the kernel, as the latest 
nvidia drivers in earlier kernel versions would work successfully.

That said, I'm happy I can finally suspend and resume the machine as a 
whole without random lockups, so I can live with a fading back light 
until this is addressed =)
