I have the same problem, i think this is a rights problem, because vidalia runs as the current user, but tor as root. Vidalia can´t change the config in /etc/tor/torrc either, because it´s owned by root:root by default. It would be nice, if vidalia uses homedir/.vidalia/torrc by default and the tor client does not start as a service by default. So vidalia could control tor by startingi it as the current user with -f homedir/.vidalia/torrc. So this bug should be assigned to the vidalia package not tor!
