nfusi, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Hardy desktop reached EOL on May 12, 2011. Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases
We were wondering if this is still an issue on a supported release? If so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a supported release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number> Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. ** Description changed: I have a HP zd7395ea laptop, running on a P4 3.6ghz cpu. Linux xxxxxx 2.6.24-17-generic #1 SMP Thu May 1 14:31:33 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux Even after a cold start, the fan starts up and does not turn off until I shutdown. The cpu temp after a cold start should be 43 C, but it's actually 56 C. This problem does not happen with the previous kernel (2.6.22) or windows, it happens only with the hardy kernel (2.6.24-17). - Turning off acpi (by passing acpi=off at boot) "solves" the problem. I have experienced this bug even with a vanilla 2.6.24 kernel. + Steps to reproduce: turn on the laptop, wait until the kernel is loaded - Steps to reproduce: turn on the laptop, wait until the kernel is loaded + WORKAROUND: Turning off acpi (by passing acpi=off at boot) "solves" the + problem. ** Tags added: hardy needs-upstream-testing regression-release ** Attachment removed: "lsmod when fan works normally" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226397/+attachment/413793/+files/modulos_con_fan_control.txt ** Attachment removed: "lsmod when fan runs nonstop" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226397/+attachment/413794/+files/modulos_sin_fan_control.txt ** Attachment removed: "my lspci -vvnn" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226397/+attachment/413795/+files/lspci_vvnn.txt ** Attachment removed: "dmesg when fan works normally" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226397/+attachment/413796/+files/dmesg.con_fan_control.txt ** Attachment removed: "dmesg when fan runs nonstop" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226397/+attachment/413797/+files/dmesg.sin_fan_control.txt ** Attachment removed: "8 log files" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226397/+attachment/422774/+files/log_and_info_fan_problem.tar ** Attachment removed: "warmup.gz" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226397/+attachment/427766/+files/warmup.gz ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/226397 Title: fan never turns off To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226397/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
