We were wondering if this is still an issue on a supported release? If so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a supported release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number> Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. This problem has been reproduced on Ubuntu 8.10 and 8.4. Across all tested kernels (different versions and types of kernels) When the PCI-express graphics card is removed from the port and the internal graphics card is used, the sound works. The sound works under windows when the graphics card is installed, therefore its not a hardware problem. The soundcard is discovered by the system (shows up as an HDA Intel ALC888 card) even when the sound does not work. The result of the test function (using gnome-sound-pro, sound playback test) is an error message: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback. - Another bug states the installation of the NVIDIA graphics drivers as the cause og the sound failure, this is not the problem in my case. - No sound is produced after a clean install, where no graphics drivers are installed.
