it is expected in the sense that it behaved that way ever since I remember not that it makes sense for technical or less technical users. I agree it is not a good default, but the same thing is done by nautilus (not an good excuse I know) Anyway xffm4 is not in the default xubuntu desktop it is in universe, and it's not part of the upcoming xfce 4.4 As you say Xubuntu is an user-friendly GUI oriented distro, hence it does not provide xffm4. In order to break your desktop you have to explicitely install it and run it ;) On the bright side thunar is going to hopefully gain samba browsing capabilities before edgy at least it is planned by upstream, as smb is the reason most people need xffm anyway.
