Rodney, thanks a lot for the answer. Your post confirms that F14 is too
old for the client and at least I have a clear starting situation now
:-). However, I've been reluctant to upgrade as I devoted lots of time
setting this whole thing up, and wouldn't like to have to repeat all
these activities again (including Citrix, VPN IPSec, WINE, mmedia, and
so on). And I really need a cloud application.

Well, I know that what I'm going to ask now should be a different
subject, but (and here my freshness shows itself in full) I'd like just
to know if it is at all worth my while to try to look for a solution to
the problem of migrating an existing distro installation to a newer one
after upgrade, e.g. by copying the "/etc." "/home" etc. folders, without
having to reconfigure the new release from scratch? Seems pretty
universal a question, equally valid for any distro. Just "yes" or "no"
and, Mr Admin, here I stop, I'll behave decently ever after, I promise
:-).
