Mike, The patch for XBMC uses libaften. libaften is just a derivative of the original a52 ALSA plugin that ALSA's source distribution already ships with, but with the audio renderer backend agnostic (no ALSA output). So I don't think it makes sense to say that the ALSA project "skipped over it" since it already has A52 output. What I still don't understand is what a52plug is.
