I'm sorry for the extra work, but it seems that these errors were caused
by a faulty cable. Unfortunately it started to show signs just after I
have switched to a new laptop so I assumed that the error is there.

But when the problem manifested itself with the manually compiled driver
too, I have done more extensive testing and it seems that it works
reliably with the new cable.
