Same on my x61s. Worked great on older distros since 10.04, after upgrade to 12.04 same behaviour as #6. Kernel is 3.2.0-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 16:51:22 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux, so NOT amd64 here (linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic) but was the same problem with every kernel version on 12.04 before.
To me it seems that the display is sometimes not correctly re-initialized after suspend.
