Same on my x61s. Worked great on older distros since 10.04, after
upgrade to 12.04 same behaviour as #6. Kernel is 3.2.0-24-generic
#39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 16:51:22 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux, so
NOT amd64 here (linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic) but was the same problem
with every kernel version on 12.04 before.

To me it seems that the display is sometimes not correctly re-initialized after
suspend. Graphics are identified on my box as:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
Graphics Controller (secondary) (rev 0c)
