Only Google Chrome works (not Chromium installed via the Software Centre but
the version installed as in comment #1).
Why Firefox still fails to enable flash, I do not know. There doesn't seem to
be anything wrong with the flashplayer installed - see this output:

 lsb_release -a; dpkg -l | egrep 'flash|gnash|swf|spark'

Title:
Since upgrading to 12.04 flash player does not work in either Firefox
or Chrome. No method suggested works including reinstalling Ubuntu
12.04. I also find it impossible to update Java which Firefox says it
has stopped because it is out of date. update
