I can reproduce systematically with a 12.04 (final ISO, Unity 5.10) in
VirtualBox (boot on the ISO -> choose "Try Ubuntu" -> System settings
-> Appearance -> set "high contrast". No other change.). The menu bar
becomes transparent.

Then I typed unity --reset . See the attached logs. The effect is that :
the menu bar remains transparent, and Compiz crash with SIGSEGV when I
click on the menu bar or open a window or else..

Remark: I have no internet in VirtualBox (bug of VB?), so I can't test
with Unity 5.12.

** Attachment added: "logs of unity --reset"
