As the bug existed in the mainline kernel, I went back to standard
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to get all security updates etc. I recently installed
all upgrades and the situation got worse. Now if I plug in the power
cord the system slows down so much that using it comes unbearable.

Running:
Linux Latitude-E5420 3.2.0-25-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 23 20:30:51 UTC
2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I'll reinstall the 3.4 mainline kernel as it is was a little bit more
usable.
