A fix was made to the vsync (Sync To VBlank) code in compiz in February,
which greatly reduces display stuttering/slowness with fglrx.
Also unity 5.12-0ubuntu1.1 was released on 5th June 2012. It contains a
fix for poor OpenGL performance.
Please try Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise Pangolin" with all updates installed
(particularly compiz and unity) and let us know if things are better.
