Thanks for your comment and help - I've had a closer look at my data files in /var/lib/mysql.
Strangely ibdata1 and ib_logfile1 were executable and contained bits of shell scripts from a firefox and openprinting-ppds installation. I don't quite know how things got that mixed up and will attach these files for further reference. -rwxr-xr-x 1 mysql mysql 3486 Okt 5 2010 ibdata1 -rwxr-xr-x 1 mysql mysql 505 Okt 27 2010 ib_logfile0 After deleting these and restarting mysql everything is up and running and the current files look a lot more like database files. -rw-rw---- 1 mysql mysql 18874368 Jun 23 00:03 ibdata1 -rw-rw---- 1 mysql mysql 5242880 Jun 23 00:03 ib_logfile0 -rw-rw---- 1 mysql mysql 5242880 Jun 23 00:02 ib_logfile1 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1013641 Title: package mysql-server-5.5 5.5.24-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: Unterprozess installiertes post-installation-Skript gab den Fehlerwert 1 zurück To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-5.5/+bug/1013641/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
