Alta88 claims in Bug 531397 Comment 12 that his MoreLayoutsforThunderbird addon (1) fixes many bugs that occur when changing View > Layout.
Maybe he can help to fix this longstanding bug (15 duplicates since 2004), or somebody can get some coding inspiration from his addon.
