This problem is only affecting my laptop speakers. If I plug my headphones into the headphone jack the sound from my headphones is fine.
I also added the audio PPA and ran updates but it did not make any difference: ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa I suspect that after I ran the kernel update the driver that was being used for my speakers changed.
