Actually, although it goes through the motions under XFCE DE, the actual
volume level does not rise & fall.  The GUI will show volume
increasing/decreasing but volume can only be controlled from system tray
left click.

So, basically, volume hot keys do not work under XFCE or Xubuntu
environment.
