I've tried searching for more info on this issue, but no luck. In the mean time, I have set up a trial with 6.10 (a nis server and client) and the same configuration works with 6.10.
Bug # 90693 seemed like it might be applicable, but adding the -no-dbus arg to YPBINDARGS did not solve my problem.
