I don't believe this is a duplicate of #869635 at all.
On my son's computer (running Precise Pangolin) I have seen this
behaviour since I added an NFS mounted filesystem into /etc/fstab, and
it was resolved by the link changes suggested by the original reporter.
In bug #869635 it talks about "taking a very long time", whereas this
bug report talks about "forever", and "forever" certainly seems to be
the behaviour I have seen (well, OK, I only waited for 12 hours :-)
