Yes I will try to do as you have described. In answer to your Q about versions, I have tried all of the below. Out of these the only one that worked with no freeze was Linux Mint 10 Julia 64-bit. I've just finished install of Ubuntu 10.04.3 64-bit Desktop and that looks like it works too as expected since Mint did.
