I think I found why this happened. At least, I reproduced the same
behavior in a fresh new installation when I added the following lines to
my .profile

cd $ROOTSYS
. bin/thisroot.sh
cd $HOME

The shell script sets environment variables important for running the
CERN root analysis software. I guess the problem was the last line where
I switched to the home folder.
