Found a fix at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=135543 follow the link to http://thecodecentral.com/2011/01/18/fix-ubuntu-10-10 -suspendhibernate-not-working-bug . Note change required highlighted by Vortex375: change DRIVERS="ehci xhci" to DRIVERS="ehci ohci".
