This appears to be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1014102. Purging
and reinstalling grub then reinstalling the kernel packages linux-
image-3.2.0-26-generic, linux-image-generic, and linux-generic solved
the problem. Thank you Brad (comment #2)
