The issue doesn't appear to involve pulseaudio (pulseaudio isn't going
to work if the alsa driver/kernel module isn't loaded). I'm converting
this to a question since you appear to have made custom modifications to
your install (by manually upgrading parts of ALSA and using backported
kernel).
