So I finally had to just wipe the netbook and install Ubuntu 10.10.4 . The screen started freezing up again in 12.04. It is definitely something to do with network-manager-gnome especially the wireless. That seems to be the main source of the freezing of the desktop. When it happens everything locks, mouse, buttons, everything. I ended up having to install 12.04 as a virtual machine ontop of the Ubuntu 10.10.4. This is a VERY clugy workaround I hope we are going to see a fix at least by 12.10 release time. It's not like the Acer Aspire AO722 Netbook is some sort of obscure piece of hardware so hopefully it will be addressed. Thanks.
