Problem seems to be solved for now. After some reading on other fora, I uninstalled nouveau display driver (via softwarecentre) which was supposed to cause conflict with the Intel drivers, and therefore maybe also with radeon drivers http://lcardinaals.wordpress.com/2012/04/25/ubuntu-12-04-myunity/ http://thorwil.wordpress.com/2012/05/16/fun-with-graphics-card-drivers-in-ubuntu-12-04/ But I also received some xorg related updates.
