For me it works with my Epson Stylus Color 880, also on USB.

I have done a lot of development on the USB CUPS backend, so it is
possible that it works for me due to my changes. To test my new backend
install CUPS from my PPA. To do so, go to

https://launchpad.net/~till-kamppeter/+archive/ppa

and follow the instructions in the "Adding this PPA to your system"
section. After that update your system.

Make also sure that your printer actually uses the USB backend and not
the TPU backend from Turboprint. The maintenance functions of Gutenprint
(controlled by the buttons in system-config-printer) probably only work
with the USB backend. As a workaround you can also use nozzle check and
head cleaning in Turboprint.

If my new USB backend does not help, perhaps Gutenprint sends incorrect
commands. please test also the "escputil" command line utility.
Especially if this utility does also not work but Turboprint works we
have probably a problem in Gutenprint. Then it would be great if you
could capture the data which Turboprint sends to the printer so that we
can give this data to the Gutenprint developers.
