Public bug reported:
Actually, I am not sure that it is a nouveau-bug; could be nvidia / nv, whatnot.
What happened is, I had a working install (Kubuntu). After the normal upgrade
to 12.04, all was lost. nouveau wasn´t doing okay, with strange effects, wrong
colours, slowliness overall. So I decided to use the binary blob from NVIDIA.
Since that reboot, com, pletely nothing. Kubuntu would start, but then remain so
slow that the panels could not build up completely; I could not even get a
console to run `top`. Lost cause.
So I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 from scratch (ISO), that is Unity, over it.
Somehow, during the installation it also did NVIDIA, again. After the first
reboot, the same happened: totally slow. Just the background and a black line
where the panel should come up. No chance with Ctrl-Alt-Del; only Ctrl-Alt-F4;
back to command line. So i could at least harvest the Xorg log file and reboot
to failsafe. Failsafe also didn´t work, and I could harvest the Xorg Failsafe
file. Another reboot, and set Unity to 2D. Now this works okay, though, again,
with the NVIDIA-driver. The Xorg log is attached as well.
Strange enough:
With NVIDIA, no 3D-acceleration
With NVIDIA total slowness of the two independent systems
There is a - to me - strange loading and unloading of drivers going on
(see the Xorg log files). i could only make out that the NVIDIA is
actually active by checking it settings ("NVIDIA X Server Settings"
shows that the driver used is NVIDIA).
The auto-generated xorg.conf is
Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection
To me this is a bug and regression, because it was okay (at least better if not
normal) before the upgrade.
Secondly, a fresh install should work.
