Hello, Till: There were two issues. First, as I first reported, the
driver for HP DeskJet 672 did not work and the "printer may not be
connected" message appeared. So the next issue was the problems
involving the make file for the hplip-3.12.6 tarball which I downloaded.
I never did get this to work. This package included a manual which would
seem to be very helpful. Perhaps if I persisted I might have been
successful, but there were missing dependencies (sane). While perusing
various sites I suddenly came across the CUPS 1.5.0 and followed the
instructions which explicitly mentioned the parallel port. In contrast,
the hplip package needed me to use the parallel build as an option. When
I used that option with the hplip the process in make did not object to
me using that option but rather stalled (not finding sane). It was the
CUPS 1.5.0 that quickly installed or enabled the 670C driver to get my
printer to work. At this point I guess my only remaining questions are
with regard to getting the hplip package to make. I think that the bug
is somewhat incomplete documentation of the manual, although the manual
seems to be pretty good for someone with more than minimal experience
with these installations. I also had a hard time with permissions; once
in the root-administrator desktop I couldn't get at the system to do the
make as a user. Once more, I think, lack of knowledge. In answering your
question, ignoring the "..not connected" message and trying to print did
not work. The CUPS 1.5.0 HP670C installation enabled successful
printing. The printer is connected to a parallel port in the Gigabyte
GA-H61M-S2PV motherboard (no USB adapter).
