Also, I gave the "Show Repaint" plugin a try for the first time ever
today.

I don't know if this is normal or could be related to the bug, but the plugin 
indicates continuous, periodic (in 1 to 4 second intervals) repaints when 
nothing is happening on the screen (no cursors, no animations, no videos,  
mouse not moving, etc).
The clock would need redrawing every minute at least, but I'm not sure what 
else might be redrawing.
