I can add some information to the latest comment: - An integrity check of the medium did not find any errors - A hardware check (memory) did not find any errors - The filesystem errors were "SquashFS: unable to read inode" and some others, about 8 times for every command - Clicking on any icon or applet on the desktop (after installation) made that icon or applet disappear and nothing more happen - The laptop is: Acer TravelMate 4100, video ATI Radeon Mobility X700. - The problem is completely reproducaeble. - Before an attempt to install anything, everything worked fine, except that it did not seem to remember manual network configuration.
