Same here..."manual nomodeset fix" and other minor workarounds didn't helped.....with previous nvidia driver e/o kernel (I can't be sure which of them exactly..) on the same 12.04 the nomodeset worked..... Now splashscreen only on shutdown/reboot... Grub menu changes resolution "as it should"....but noway to let splashscreen appear at any supported resolution....
